Lawyer: Salman Khan released on bail (AP)

JAIPUR, India - A court in Jodhpur released popular Bollywood actor Salman Khan on bail Friday in a poaching case, his lawyer said.

He had been held at the Jodhpur Central Jail since his arrest last Saturday, said his lawyer, Dipesh Mehta.

Khan, who has played many macho roles in Hindi-language films, was expected to fly home to Mumbai on Friday night.

He was arrested after a Jodhpur appeals court upheld an earlier judgment and ordered him to begin serving a five-year prison term. He had been out on bail since April 2006.

Khan was sentenced to prison in the poaching of a rare buck in a desert wildlife preserve in 1998. He has denied any involvement in the incident.

Khan, the eldest son of famous Bollywood scriptwriter Salim Khan, became a household name with his second film, "Maine Pyar Kiya (I Have Loved)," in 1989, followed by one of the biggest hits of the 1990s, "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (What Am I to You)."

His recent movies include the romantic film "Marigold" and comic caper "Partner."
