Business is hell
By the end of the first episode of "Angel's" 5th season I was reeling in delight. If "Buffy" had a single starting premise, it was "high school is hell" - literally. And from that idea flowed riches galore. Well, most of us who have ever logged hours in corporate America know that H.S. is just a warm-up for the Hellmouth known as The Office. "Angel's" 5th season, by hitting on that fundamental theme, comes up with GREAT moments and storylines. I found the new season to be tremendously refreshing after slogging through the too-heavy muck of Season 4.
Probably not everything in Season 5 fits into the "office life is hell" metaphor, Joss Whedon being the uber-creative guy he is, but a whole lot does (imagine a sweet young thing turning into a demon lady through corporate life....naah, THAT'd never happen....). Too bad the network didn't cotton onto the potential of the new direction enough to give us a sixth season. But what can you say about TV execs when shows like FIRELY get cancelled? Maybe only this: they are, after all, living corporate-life-is-hell storylines themselves.
