Legend
This season was great. It took the show back to what it was in the early days, a touching metaphor for life, while keeping you entertaining you. It also helped that this season has so many funny episodes.
From the onset, it was clear this might (Unfortunatly) be the last season, and what an amazing final season arc they gave us. Angel & friends fighting evil, from within an evil law firm. Yet they proved they could still keep their integrity.
The highlighted episodes are "Hellbound," where the producers dare to tell a border line horror story. "Life Of The Party," where we finally see a Lorne story line, and the 1st non-stop laugh out loud episode. (Fred: How much have you had to drink? Wesley" About a half of a third of this beer!) "Destiny," anther insightful flashback episode, where we learn why Angel & SPike hate each other so. "You're Welcome," Cordy returns, as well as Angel's old nemesis, the lawyer Lindsey, to have the best fight sequence since Angel meet The Beast on a roof top last year. "Smile Time," another episode to laugh you to death which has Angel transformed intp a puppet (though a puppet with vampire strength). And of course the finale, which transforms our heroes into legends!
The season only had one episode without any purpose at all, "The Girl In Question." This episode has Angel & Spike running aorund like school boys, looking for Buffy (who mind you isn't even in the episode), and getting bullied by some ugly minions of a villian (who also mind you is not in the epsode - nor was he ever in an episode). Even episodes that didn't have to been done, like "Harm's Way," & "Why We Fight" were enjoyable.
The DVD features are also great. Lot's of insightful commentaries, by all your favorites on the crew. Even David Boreanez finally makes one, and let's face it - you want the lead actor to do one (at least).
Alot of cool featurettes. The season overview was great. I did not see the point of doing another featurette on making the stunts (as they out on the season 2 set), but it's still pretty cool. I also did not like that the interviews about Smile Time were not on the same disc as the episode, but a minor detail. Thought they did take the time to interview everyone involved in the episode, including the puppets, lol.
I was glad to see some outtakes, but disapointed that there was again no deleted scenes. Atleast this time the gag reel was funny (season 4's wasn't).
I am always bummed out that the people doing commentary keep talking about deleted scenes, but Fox is to cheap to let up see them. I guess they see leaving them on a shelf to collect dust as a good place for them.
A pleasant suprise is that they left the "previously on Angel" clips at the begining of the episodes. Even though there were only about 3 episodes this season that had previously clips, I still like to see them.
One last thing to talk about is the artistic design of the packaging. If you have been collecting Angel on DVD, then you know they like to put quotes all over the inside from various episodes. However, after season 1, they got tired, and put quotes from only 2 episodes. Here they use quote a nice assortment. And oh the pictures around are nice to.
Though the season/series ends on a cliff hanger, dispite what Joss Whedon says. It was a great way to end. Redemption enver ends, and the fight goes on. I don't believe for one second that they lost that final battle. It's just that now the next phase is left to our imaginations, which is why so many fan are writting fan fictions (whether spin-offs or a virtual season 6).
