When An Angel Falls
Personally I have very mixed feelings about Angel: Season Five. While most reviewers here on Amazzon.com really seem to have enjoyed it, I'm quite disappointed with the ending of the series. Oh, believe me, the season does have its good moments. I think I just miss the good old days of Buffy and Angel. One of the things that bugs me is the last episode and how it ended. I guess that the studios really weren't going to give Joss and the others any chance to leave Angel as it should have, like Joss was able to do with the Buffy-Verse. I just felt like a lot of the characters were rather out-of-character.
Does no one even remember Buffy now? It almost seemed like Joss's creative team was taking old storylines from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Smile Time reminded me way too much of one of Buffy's earlier episodes, The Puppet Show. However, I might just be getting picky here. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to try and keep up a show like 'Angel' and always keep it original. The Angel team did a great job. I'm just much more of a Buffy fan then an Angel fan.
What really irritated me though, was how all of the leading male characters started to fall for Winifred (Fred). Okay, now seriously. What was that all about? Do you honestly think that Spike and Fred would look good together? Or Angel and Fred? I really don't like what they did to Lorne's character either. He was one of my favorite original characters in the Angel-verse and again, why the heck did all of the guys have to fall in love with Fred? They should have put in some new blood in the show or something to spice it up.
I have a lot of respect for Joss Whedon though. I mean, I really do. I just wish that Angel had ended differently is all. I mean, turning Lorne into a killer was a bit too much for me. It was as if the creative team on the show didn't really know what to do with Lorne and so they had to have him kill somebody.
Or maybe it's just the fact that I don't like to see Lorne sad.
Again, the whole season wasn't terrible. I just wish that they had made some other choices storyline-wise. After I watched season five on DVD I completely understood why Angel was taken off the air.
