A reluctant fan of a well done re-working of the original

When they first released the mini-series, I was one of the fans of the original series who avoided this version out of principle. I was a boy when the first series came out and never missed an episode, so when they changed the gender of main characters, and showed the familiar cylons as humans, I was reluctant to get onboard.

This version is far darker than the original, the acting and writing much better, and the undertones more philosophical. While the original had some interesting nods to Egyptian history and the "architects of the pyramids", the philosophical context here is more aligned to the creation of artificial intelligence, and whether a soul may be present.

The basic storyline is that an artificial life form is created, and eventually forms a society which turns on their creators. The story here takes place 40 years after the last known contact with this race of machines called the cylons. The events unfold quickly when the cyclons attack without warning.

As a movie, the jumps between scenes are a bit disjointed because it was presented as a mini-series and not a film. Some better editing might have helped in this regard. If you are a fan of science fiction, this will appeal to you, if not the contextual settings may distract from the story, which is excellent. Suspenseful, engaging, and prone to thought provoking issues, this is a great film.
