Fan of original series, this is different but equally great!
It's as great as the original series. Recommend you buy the 2003 miniseries as it sets the whole stage for the new series on Sci-Fi.
Just don't go in with expectations of "who's the new Starbuck" figuring it will be just like the original one. Dirk Benedict was awesome. Katee Sackhoff is every bit as great as Starbuck, only female. This would suck if it weren't done well, but I have to say this actress captures every bit of the original Starbuck's essence.
If you watch repeats of Season 1 (that chronologically comes after this DVD miniseries opener), you'll see Richard Hatch (Apollo) playing a radical, opposition leader amongst the fleet. I gained further appreciation for him as an actor in this new role. How cool. The new Apollo is equally as great.
Tie that all up with Edward James olmos as Adama. Again every bit as great as Lorne Greene. Let's not forget there are 2 Boomers in the new one (why 2, watch and find out).
The new Cylons are much meaner and have lots of new twists, incorporating some of the fears we have in the modern day. The special effects are understated in this show, which is perfect because real Battlestar fans know it's all about the characters, not the effects.
This miniseries opener is a must have.
