Fan of the original BSG pleasantly surprised!!
The original Battlestar Galactica series premiered on ABC when I was about 11 years old. I watched the series religiously until its cancellation, and even watched the short-lived Galactica 1980, although I was extremely disappointed that Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Herb Jefferson and Laurette Spang did not return for this series. Now, after re-broadcasts on the SCI-FI Channel and separate attempts by Glen Larson and Richard Hatch to revive the show, Galactica is reborn as a miniseries and now a new weekly series on the SCI-FI Channel. I missed the original broadcast of the miniseries, but did recently purchase the DVD. I will admit I was pleasantly surprised. The new Galactica is good, very good. And in some ways, it is even superior to the original. Several actors turn in some outstanding performances here, including Edward James Olmos as Commander William Adama, Mary McDonnell as President Laura Roslin, Jamie Bamber as Captain Lee "Apollo" Adama, as well as Katee Sackhoff as Lieutenant Kara "Starbuck" Thrace and Grace Park as Sharon "Boomer" Valerii. The new Galactica has more of a backstory on the history between the Colonial humans and the Cylons, evoking themes from the Butlerian Jihad in the history from Frank Herbert's Dune universe and from Issac Asimov's robot novels. I also love how the miniseries and new series have a much grittier feel for the Galactica universe. As I write this review, it has been reported that the new BSG has already achieved something the original did not--a second season. I'm already looking forward to Season Two. While BSG purists might hate the new Galactica, I wholeheartedly recommend Battlestar Galactica: The Miniseries to new fans as well as to old fans with open minds.
