I have been won over!
I gotta admit, I was one of those die-hard BG purists. When I heard they were "re-imagining" one of the most beloved sci-fi classics I was pissed. Especially when I heard Starbuck and Boomer were being made into women. There was no way I would ever watch it.
But I happened to catch bits and pieces of the mini on Sci-Fi and had a hard time turning the station. And when I did, for some unexplainable reason I would switch it back during commercial breaks on whatever station I was watching at the time.
Then at the end of the mini I was in shock. Not only was Boomer a woman but now a Cylon! What?!
Well, I had to watch the mini after that to figure things out. And if I sat back and watched it on it's merits as a sci-fi show, ignoring the aspects that were in common with the classic series and the obvious differences, I found out I was engrossed in the plot.
And I gotta say, I love it. It's an excellent show with a brave (who else would be willing to go against the fanbase to star in the new series?) and talented cast. And this series seems more relevant to us today than the original. (I still love the original, but this is just as good. Dare I say sometimes better? Gasp!)
I love the dynamic between Lee "Apollo" Adama and Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. Jamie Bamber and Katee Sackhoff handle the roles with ease. We can see the friendship that has always been the basis of these characters and the underlying sexual tension. We all know sexual tension makes for an interesting plot! And before when Commander Adama was mentioned I automatically thought of Lorne Greene (and who didn't?) but to have Edward James Olmos play the larger than life role was inspired. (He himself is a larger than life actor.) And to add the role of Laura Roslin makes complete sense. The Colonies would have needed a government that make more sense than the council of the old series.
In all, I have to say I'm glad I sat down and decided to give this series a chance.
