Being Julia

Annette Bening shines

Annette Bening is extraordinary in this film. That's been said many times, but it deserves repeating. She reminded me of Glen Close, who deserved an Oscar for her outstanding performance in Dangerous Liaisons, using her face as an instrument of acting. Most often actors use their whole bodies - and while there are scenes where she does - most of the acting takes place in/on her face, and to watch her hide an emotion while showing a different one to the world around her was an astonishing thing to watch. This movie establishes her as one of the great, and perhaps least appreciated, actresses of our time. I loved Million Dollar Baby, and thought Hillary Swank was phenomenal in her role, but after watching Being Julia (in my mind not as good, overall, as Million Dollar Baby), I truly believe that Annette Bening deserved that award.
