Being Julia
Tailor-made movie.....
Being Julia starring Annette Benning and Jeremy Irons proves to be a pretty good movie. I gave it a 3.5 stars if I could. The movie directed by Istvan Szabo was tailor-made for Annette Benning to played to perfection. However, I would say that any really competence late middle age actress could easily played this role and do a great job. It was Benning's good fortune to be casted in this movie and she took advantage of it.
As great as Annette Benning was in this movie, I thought the film as a whole was pretty under written. It may be that there are too many characters in the film but they all began look bit stale on the screen after awhile. Great actors like Jeremy Irons, Bruce Greenwood, Shaun Evans and even Lucy Punch seem little more then two dimensional character despite of the screen time they shared with Benning. It was like Benning being the sun and rest of the actors were the planets. Benning carried most of the load throughout the film.
I read that the Oscar race was between Benning and Hilary Swank. It was won by Swank and deservingly so. The main reason I would think that Swank won was that she was in a much superior film. Benning was in the same position as Jaime Foxx was in Ray, a great acting performance but stuck in a good but not outstanding film.
The movie should pleased anyone who is an Annette Benning fan. All her best qualities as an actress is shown here and she is very good in this movie.
