Being Julia

3 1/2 Stars: Bening is a STAHHHHHHH!

Annette Bening does as much scene chewing as is humanly possible in "Being Julia" a film dedicated to the proposition that stars/celebrities are not created equal to the rest of us.
Julia is a star of the London stage and does her best to live up to this honor by acting as theatrical and emotionally overboard in her personal life as possible.
In "Being Julia," Julia is the queen and everyone else is there to service her needs and wants. "Being Julia" then is the poor man's version of "All About Eve," without Anne Baxter to make a play for the lead role.
Director Istvan Szabo is lucky to have Bening in this project because she exudes not only a rare sunniness and levity in her performance as Julia but a tongue-in-cheek irony as well. The plot, as it is, is not much but Bening does her best to make it amusing and interesting.
"Being Julia" is a big leaden Matzo Ball of a movie and Bening adds the baking soda that leavens and brightens making it palatable at least and fun and entertaining at most.
