The New King of Comedy
I can't imagine that Dave Chappelle ever believed that a late night show at Comedy Central would have been his ticket to superstardom. Already familiar from roles in Robin Hood: Men in Tights and the stoner classic Half-Baked, Chappelle combined razor-sharp wit with an unapologetically acidic view on race relations and politics and a little raunch (okay, more than a little) to create one of the funniest shows on television. After a memorably hilarious first season, his show's second season contained numerous laugh riots, including his impersonations of Prince as a basketball god; Rick James as, well, Rick James (who made an appearance on the show himself before his death); and countless others. This season also included his Racial Draft, a clever send-up of which race multicultural celebrities empathize with, and "Wayne Brady's Show", an episode where Dave Chappelle was supposed to have quit, but the show went on with Wayne Brady as host, leading to a really funny moment with Brady sending up his image as a goody-goody with drive-by shootings, pimping, and paranoid antics. Also, who can forget "I Know Black People", where Dave asks average folks (including series co-creator Neal Brennan) questions about Blackness for a winners' pot valued at about $50. Memorable moment: "Why do Black people like menthols so much?" "I don't know." "That's correct. Nobody knows."
In short, this show isn't for everyone, especially the prudish. In my opinion, the scatological (toilet) humor is the least funny aspect of the whole show, but I'm willing to indulge Dave if in exchange I get more moments like Wayne Brady's Show. In short, read my and the others' reviews and judge for yourself if this show is something you'd enjoy.
