Deadwood - The Complete First Season (2004)

"McCabe & Mrs. Miller" meets "The Sopranos"

A muddy, ill-formed town without law. Good guys. Bad guys. Conspiracies around every corner and up each flight of stairs. Hard money and easy money.

While it doesn't have the violent-soap-opera accessibility of "The Sopranos," it does have that series' killer twists and reversals - just when we think we've nailed a character down, they do something that completely changes the way we view them. In that sense, it's as if David Milch tipped his hat to David Chase and then completely took over the town in "McCabe & Mrs. Miller." Really solid performances by Tim Olyphant, Molly Parker, et al. And Swearingen's role seems so tailor-made for Ian McShayne that he may never be able to convincingly play another role after this.

One minor quibble: Why only two episodes per disk? I'm renting them one at a time and 2 eps per platter makes it tricky.
