Pure magic

Another superb performance from Johnny Depp is one of many highlights of Finding Neverland, a film filled with enough sweetness to prevent it from turning sour, something which may have happened were the film not in the hands of director Marc Forster. Depp plays playwright J. M. Barrie, who after his most recent play bombs, meets widow Sylvia (Kate Winslet) and her four boys while in the park. Soon enough, a friendship is forged with Sylvia, and a bond is formed with her sons, including young Peter who may have grown up too quickly. Even though Barrie's distant wife (Radha Mitchell) and Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie) disapprove, Barrie continues the relationship with the family, inspiring him to write Peter Pan. The cast does fantastic work with Depp giving one of the finest performances of his career, while Kate Winslet is Kate Winslet: giving the perfect blend of subtlety and believeability to her character. Finding Neverland is pure magic from beginning to end, powered by it's emotional and whimsical storytelling making it something really special. Also featuring Dustin Hoffman (Hook himself) as a wry theater owner. The DVD features are pretty scarce minus a commentary, but the surprisingly hilarious outtake reel is worth the price of admission alone.
