Full House - The Complete First Season (1987)

A full house of people, but not much talent.

For what reason did this show need to be released on DVD? It it without a doubt one of the most uninspired, insipid, and treacly shows ever thrust on America.
Bob Saget may be a good comedian, but he has all the acting chops of a cigar-store indian. (Suggestion for drinking game-take a drink every time Bob coos "Aw, Michelle", "Aw Steph" or "Aw D.J."). Dave Coulier is the world's most annoying stand-up, his impressions third-rate at best. And besides the girly-man hair, why is John Stamos famous, exactly? The girls are cute, but their performances are no better than the men in the show. Jodie Sweetin especially looks as though she is regurgitating lines that a production assistant fed her 30 seconds before the director yelled "action". In an early episode, Candice Cameron as D.J. (who the men idiotically call "Deej", isn't "D.J." already a truncated form of "Donna Jo"?) whines that she was put in the smart class at school. Wow, if she's in the smart class, I would dread seeing the remedial class in that particular institution. The one small thing that makes the show worth a quick look are the Olsen twins as baby Michelle. They are adorable and steal any scene that they are in. This is, of course, before she began to speak and the "writers" had her saying "You got it, dude" eight times in every episode.
The unaired pilot included as an extra with someone named John Posey in the Danny Tanner role is worth a look, if only because Posey is even worse in the role than Saget. It made me appreciate Bob's performance for all of 5 seconds.
If this is the state American sit-coms were in in 1987, it's no wonder SEINFELD needed to come along and save the genre. My advice is to forget this drivel and purchase the first three seasons of THAT show elsewhere on this site.
The extra star is for decent packaging. The content of the show rates a single star.
