Classic!
Finally Hogan's Heroes on DVD! Well worth the wait as well. The five-disk set is nicely packed in five slim DVD cases that have a description of each episode on them. This is one of the better set packaging schemes I've seen. There is a 'play all' feature for each disk so you can play all seven episodes on the disk in one continuouse shot (35 episodes in all).
The video and color quality is, surprisingly, excellent and surpasses that of the M*A*S*H DVD's in my opinion.
Considering that the first season aired in 1965 I think the show holds up remarkably well. There are a few dud episodes in the first season but overall the show is a classic slapstick comedy that even teaches a tad about history (especially for what they get wrong). Overall the show doesn't have the depth or social statements of M*A*S*H but that has its own appeal in many ways. A very young William Christopher, who played Father Mulcahy on M*A*S*H, even appears as a guest character. The cast was quickly cohesive and the performances by many of the cast members, especially John Banner as Sgt Schultz, are marvelous. The sets and uniforms were very well done even my today's standards.
The show is good, clean fun and suitable for all ages. Even my wife, who had never seen the show before, enjoyed it. If you liked it when it was on TV the set is a must get. If you've never seen it before but enjoy good, mindless, fun with a touch of history give it a try.
