The long wait is over!
Of all the sitcoms I have seen over the years, I only rate three as 10/10 material. The Golden Girls, Family Ties and of course, Hogan's Heroes. This show did what no other dared to do so close after the end of WWII- portray an awful event (ie POW camps during WWII) in a not so serious light and showed up the Nazis as bumbling idiots. I have every episode on video and I must have watched all of them at least 500 times, so much in fact that the quality of the VHS tape has degraded badly. What a joy it was then, to finally place the first disc into my DVD player and watch a classic in its full glory (TV stations in Australia have edited all the episodes and cut certain scenes to fit their timeslots, so about 5 minutes from each episode is missing on Aussie TV), clear as the day it was recorded for the first time. Its hard to believe that most of the cast members have passed on, except for Ivan Dixon, Robert Clary, Richard Dawson and Leon Askin, but their work will live on forever. I cannot wait for the other five seasons to be released.
I do agree though that an extras disc would be nice, maybe a cast profile (especially of my favourite cast members, the late Werner Klemperer and the late Larry Hovis), with a commentary from maybe the remainig cast or even from the Hogan's Heroes guru, Brenda Royce Scott. Also I would love to see outtakes. Who knows, maybe in the later sets.
However, having said that, what Hogan Heroes fan could ever be disappointed with this release. The long wait is finally over for us suffering fans. Bravo!!
