Jesus of Nazareth-Franco Zeffirelli
I have seen this movie often, and have always greatly enjoyed it! It is excellent and sticks very close to scriptures. They did not have to go to the extent that Mel Gibson's "Passion of The Christ" did to get the point across of human suffering and the extreme pain and suffering that Jesus went through. Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ" is oustanding so I hear. I haven't watched it, and cannot get myself to watch it, because Jesus suffering in "Jesus of Nazareth" is convincing enough for me; however, some people need something as extreme as Mel's movie to get the point accross. In Jesus of Nazareth, I thought Olivia Hussey looked extremely young to play the late 40s early 50 year old mother of Jesus, which Bancroft could have played, Ms. Hussey's performance as Mary retrieving her son Jesus from the cross was superb! To hear her laments, and wailing was absolutely gut wrenching, and if Mrs. Schindler, mother of Terri Schiavo would have cried like this before the cameras, as she pleaded for Terri's life, her case would have been even more convincing and compelling. Robert Powell was brilliant as Jesus of Nazareth, and it is beyond me, how he could have kept from blinking throughout the picture. The producer had intended Powell to do this. What discipline!!
