JJ gets it right once again...
All fans of primetime dramas that include tantalizing story/character arcs should be thanking JJ for this show...it seems like the popularity of Lost (along with Desperate Housewives) is FINALLY edging out reality TV.
I know it seems odd to review a show before it has even finished its first season, but Lost has already proven itself as one of the best shows on television and it should not be missed.
Where to begin? There are SO many aspects of Lost that are worthy of praise. From the diversity of the cast to the depth of the characters, this show seems to get every episode right on the mark. The format where the past of each character's life is juxtaposed with their issues with post-crash survival offers easy access for insight and poignant tales. Plus, everyone knows Lost is one of the best shows when it comes to surprise twists and endings (we all remember the Locke-centric "Walkabout" and the Kate-centric "Tabula Rasa" when we learned just who exactly was wearing those cuffs).
I think the best thing about Lost is how each person I talk to who likes the show has a different favorite character. You're more than likely going to have multiple favorites, but I think it's great how the diverse cast offers something for everyone. Whether its Charlie's drug/religion issues, Kate's remorse issues, Jack's father issues, Hurley's bad luck issues, Shannon's relationship issues...the show has a broad palette to suit anyone's tastes or experiences.
The extras for this DVD seem insane. They were really planning ahead...according to TVshowsonDVD.com we've got the original pilot, casting tapes, bloopers, a Matthew Fox photography featurette, audio commentaries, roundtable discussion with cast and crew, behind-the-scenes footage and so much more. The box art is classy and enticing with the ENTIRE cast represented (and I feel that they made the right choice there...this is the epitome of an ensemble show).
If you're a fan of any kind of shows that stress character/story arcs (Buffy/Angel, Alias, Six Feet Under, The L Word, etc.) or even action shows such as 24, you should definitely check this out. We were lucky to get this series on TV...
