Completely contrived, but still lots of fun
There is a reason crtics hated this film when it nonetheless did so well in the box office: It's just fun, completely unrealistic fun. The plot would never, ever be possible---the way so many things just happen to work out the way they do (everyone just happens to be at the right place at the right time)---but it is still well-written, well-acted and well-done. Parts are predictable, but not that predictable.
Essentially, the plot is a treasure hunt. The treasure was brought over to the United States and then hidden around the time of the Revolutionary War. Nicholas Cage's character is the descendant of the person to whom the first clue of the treasure was told and now seeks to find the treasure. There are great historic facts in the film, but it's hard to tell fact from fiction because so much of it can't be possible.
A fun ride, but total fantasy.
