Savor The Moment With a Barrel of Laughs
Movies do not always move in a straight line. Sideways is the type of a movie that attempts, and succeeds at taking the movie towards an unpredictable direction where the characters are in control of the plot and their destination. They make the decisions, which eventually leads them to one likely and one unlikely conclusion.
Sideways starts off with two guys, Miles and Jack, going off on a weeklong trip to California wine country to "let it loose" before making the rite of passage, the second time around, towards adulthood. Along the way, they meet two completely different women that will help them define what place they will or if they will have any significance in their lives. The uniqueness of the plot is what makes the movie as well as education or introduction to a crash course of wine tasting 101. Sideways is about tasting and savoring the moment, be it wine, friendships, or life; the characters realize and acknowledge success and disappointments in their lives.
I was impressed with the film. The exceptional aspect was the good mix of comedy and drama. For example, you'll get Miles in a down and out mood, but Jack pulled him up acting like his "guru". However, Jack loses it near the end and Miles is there to act in reverse as his "savior". There were several uncanny and surprising scenes in the film that'll make you chuckle and raise your eyebrows. Overall, it is a recommended film.
