The commentaries are excellent!
I wont waste time giving a run down of the episodes in this set, you can read other reviews for that, instead I want to focus on some details of this excellent DVD release.
First, the packaging, like all the South Park Season sets, is top notch. The 3 disc set comes in a cool digi pak with clear trays that folds up to fit in the DVD set's slipcase. The slipcase is printed on high quality paper with certain elements of the artwork given a raised and varnished touch, which adds to the sets collectibility. No inserts come with the set, instead, track listings are provided on panels inside the digi pak itself (I prefer this method over inserts because the information is visible as soon as you reach for each DVD). Surprisingly, the show is only in Dolby Digital, not 5.1 surround. Now onto the good stuff!
The strength of the South Park season DVDs lies in the mini commentaries found on each episode. Sure, the shows are great but you can catch the show several times a week on Comedy Central. You can only hear these commentaries on the DVD sets. The commentaries, or commentary minis as they're called, do not run the full length of the program. Instead, Matt and Trey come on at the start of each show, hit you with all the facts and are back out before they wear out their welcome. This is a great idea! Instead of listening to them ramble on and try to fill an entire episode with something to say, Matt & Trey cut out the bull and let the viewer in on everything they feel we would be interested in knowing. Plus, Matt and Trey come off as friends who have just dropped by to hang out and talk with you about the shows, no prentious behavior here! I found the commentaries to be very entertaining and informative, especially for the more controversial shows in this set.
This belongs in the collection of not only every South Park fan, but every fan of well written and delivered comedy.
