South Park moves beyond it's initial cliches
Season 5 was the season where Matt & Trey finally realized that killing Kenny was getting monotonous, predictable, and boring, and started to mix up the formula. It's also where they started to think bigger and move out of just having stories about a redneck town in episodes like Towelie.
One thing I really respect about South Park now is that they try really hard to keep it fresh. They don't always succeed, but they seem to catch onto when they're using a formula too much and then add elements to the show, such as moving the boys into fourth grade, making Butters and Token major characters, and making Mr Garrison openly gay. Totally unlike shows like Saturday Night Live that try really hard to find a formula that they can use thirty times in exactly the same way.
The result of this attempting to keep it fresh and doing a lot of things for shock value is that, especially in later seasons, episodes become really really hit or miss. Some really good episodes, some really bad ones. But enough really good ones to justify buying up the DVDs.
