Not the best season but pretty good. . . I have been buying the South Park DVD library season by season and I am a big fan. After purchasing season 5 in advance from Amazon, I have to say that season five is my least favorite of the first five seasons I've purchased. There is something about the content of this season that is lacking in depth and humor. I think the overall quality of the episodes is inconsistent with early years and from episode to episode. Most notably I found an incredibly dark mood to many of the episodes that took a lot of the fun out of what would have otherwise been a romp and broke stride with Matt and Trey's usual brillance where they were clearly mailing it in. That's not to say this season does not have its share of gems in the South Park legacy. Cripple Fight, Proper Condom Use, Towlie, Kenny Dies, and Super Best Friends are pure South Park gold. This is thrown in with the 'throwaways' IMHO Here Comes The Neighborhood, It Hits The Fan and the Scott Tenorman Must Die episode that you will either love or you will hate. (It was way, way too mean spirited for me to handle.) I really really enjoy South Park but not enough to drink whatever Kool-Aid they might throw my way. Some of the things they do totally crossed the line in this season to the point where I was a little bit bummed out after watching some of the episodes. For instance, Butters, the sweestest character on the show has his father in a gay massage parlour and his mother trying to kill him in a psychotic episode. This is just not funny to me in the slightest. Neither is Cartman grinding up a kid's parents into a bowl of chili or Chef, another 'good times' character, sitting down and telling Stan how God loves to wallow in the pain and sadness of people's suffering keeping in character or anything I could even remotely take in stride and still enjoy the rest of the show. I guess this is what they were going for? Anyhow, the first three seasons are ABSOLUTELY incredible and I don't think season 5 can hold a candle to those, especially Season 2 which is my favorite. However If you are someone that must have all the episodes then surely season 5 must be on the list.
