The Motorcycle Diaries (Widescreen Edition) (2004)
A review of the film - not social commentary
A couple of points to make about the movie for those interested in watching it.
First of all, the movie is a Spanish-language film. There are subtitles that can be read by an English-speaking audience. Be aware if you are going to watch this movie. It never bothers me, it may turn some people off.
Second, stylistically, the movie seems to split in the middle. The first 1/3 of the movie has the feel of a road-trip, good-times buddy film about two friends on a journey. Right about the time that they reach Peru in the film, the tone changes and it almost feels like you are watching a documentary. When the characters are meeting travelers on their journey, it seems like authentic documentary at some points; these two fine actors really having discussions with natives of these countries. It is powerful.
Finally, go into the film expecting to watch a movie and learn about a relatively well-known historical figure. Don't discredit the film because you disagree with Che's politics, or actions later in life. Take the film for being a film (with stunning scenery) and use it to further understand the person. I'm not defending his actions, just openly thinking from another perspective after this movie.
