A Slasher Film, But Why be Surprised?

This film focuses primarily upon the pain suffered by Jesus, as does the whole idea of The Passion Play in general. In this respect, it does this very well. Sure, the horror of it all is pretty much accurate--but unnecessary and pointless as it caters to those who have the sadistic desire to watch the endless torture of the Son of God, rather than focus more upon His message and words. Misguided religious movie-goers will say "see what agony The Lord has gone through for us." It is not surprising that mankind still remains in denial concerning the murder of Jesus, by claiming that His horrible death was necessary in order to save us when in fact it was politics, fear, and brutality. Honestly, try watching the history channel on cable around Easter for a clearer view of reality. As somebody who is a Catholic, I was disgusted by the focus of this film because it makes the horror movies made by Dario Argento look like Disney flicks. Good acting and talent on every level don't make up for the poor choice of subject. If you want to be moved spiritually and emotionally, watch Jesus of Nazareth instead which is by far the best film ever made about Jesus.
